SEPARATISM MOVEMENT IN INDONESIA

SEPARATISM MOVEMENT IN INDONESIA

Separatism movement is the advocacy of a state of cultural, ethnic, tribal, religious, racial, governmental, or gender separation from the larger group. While it often refers to full political secession, separatist groups may seek nothing more than greater autonomy. That is the definition that   quoted by Wikipedia. Especially in Indonesia there is some separatism groups such as OPM (Liberation of West Papua), GAM (Liberation of Aceh), and RSM (South Maluku Republic) that still struggle to segregate their districts from NKRI (The Unitary State of Indonesia).
It has been said that Papua, Maluku and Aceh have been colonized by Indonesia since Netherland leaved. They are very rich districts but unfortunately, Indonesia as the large country can’t manage the districts fairly. In Papua for example it is very Rich Island with its natural resources, beautiful panorama, and unique cultures but they are still static as if they stay in primitive era. Some of Papuan thinkers stated that government focus for Jakarta and java only, government seems treat Papua like a stepchild because the development doesn’t appear at Papua at all. GAM itself wanted to segregate because of ideological problem, moral value and also the historical survive. In 24th May 1977 GAM had been established by Hassan Asleh, Jamil Amin, Zainal Abidin, Hassan tiro and the others. They were dissatisfied with the government that never let them to regulate “syariat Islam”. RMS wasn’t better than others because they wanted to be independent but never come true.
Indonesia never let the separatists be independent because many reasons. In the very first time when the revolution happened and the liberty was proclaimed “Indonesia is from Sabang until Merauke” were justified for all of the nationalists, revolutionists and international world whether “dejure and defacto”. So Government committed to defend the Unitary State of Indonesia not only in territory but also in ideology, namely “pancasila”. It’s quite clear that Indonesia has the right to fight against every separatism movement in the nationality.

As parts of Indonesia republic, separatism problem should be solved by the government as fast and good as possible. Because it is very danger, there are many victims such as armies and society who were died because of some killings and tragedies. Government should understand what they want and then threat them properly as long as it doesn’t damage Indonesia. So far Government has taken the military and diplomatic way to solve it but the result is far from the mission, OPM, GAM, RMS still exist so maybe the solving problem doesn’t touch the root grass of it.

police officer on the street

Police Officers On The Street

Nowadays, when we go around the city we may find there are many police officers on the street. They stand to arrange the traffic so that the rider or driver can back and forth on the street all day long. Sometimes, the police arrest the road users to ask their drive/ride license, and sometimes the police will ask their many if they don’t have any license or there is something trouble with the vehicle such as rearview mirror, valve lid and directional signal.
It has been said that the police officers on the street are disasters because they just look for money by arresting the road users and then asking them whatever that can bring money. for example, there is a rider who passes the red lamp, the police will arrest him, ask some questions and then tell the rider about the law that the rider disobeys. After that the police reads how much should be paid while giving two options, the first one is finishing the problem through legal law with fine Rp. 250.000, the second one is finishing the problem through peace way, only Rp. 50.000.
In spite of those, police officers on the street have many functions and roles. They can help the driver who seeks the right way to go. Especially in the city, there are many ways that forbid to be passed so if there is policeman standing on the street, the driver can ask. Moreover, the road user will obey the traffic laws because they are afraid of the police.
In conclusion, the assumption that police is a disaster or angel depends on the situation. When the police can portray their duty as god as possible the society will respect them as the protector but if they disobey their own role as the protector the society will not respect them at all.

nobility

Nobility

Indonesia as a multicultural nation has many tribes. According to the data of census in 2000 by BPS, there are over 300 ethnic groups that spread around the world. Java tribe is the biggest tribe in Indonesia with population reach 41% of the total population. Every ethnic, has its own term to classify the society. For example, Karaeng, Daeng and Andi as noblemen  from Makassar. Priyayi (blue blood), Raden Mas and Raden from java and etc. All of the terminologies to classify people have their own history to be accepted in society.
it is believed that, nobility title has historical value for giving to people. Only the generation of king, or hero who gets the title. In Bugis tribe for instance, “andi” will be given automatically to children if the parents are “andi” as well. The title will continue for all generations if they can keep it by marrying with the same noble couple. In this term, people prefer to say that “ we have to keep the nobility title because it is the historical remain. It reminds us about the struggle of our hero in the past “.
However, in a real context of life, nobility title does not have a sacral value anymore. It is given not only for the generation of the hero or nobleman but also the one who has big influence in society. For example, Mr. A does not have historical line as nobleman in his family, but he is the richest man in his environment. As a result, people will call him as “ raden mas, andi, karaeng, opu, etc “.  Moreover, many people use their nobility title to do nepotism, discrimination and even despotism.
In conclusion, the title is not just the way it is but people create it to get a special treatment In the society. Whether noblemen or common society should  portray their status in a big stage of life to harmonize the world.
