culture and religion

Culture And Religion
By: saddam husain
For the very first time Islam came to Indonesia, it faced many cultures and rituals that had been grown for centuries. “Kapitayan” had been believed as the first religion in this country. In 1295 the Majapahit Hindu kingdom established and dominated Java Island. At that time the asceticism  had been accepted as the mainstream for all Indonesian in universal and java in particular. Culture and ritual dimensions became the distinctive feature of Indonesia. Majapahit kingdom was destroyed in 1478 and followed by the rise of Islamic sultanates in java especially in Demak. That was the stepping stone for Islamiation of Indonesia.
The islamization process in Indonesia was hampered by many aspects, for example culture and believe. Because of the fundamental princip of Islam is monotheism whereas the old religion is polytheism, Islam was difficult to be developed. Fortunately, a receptive character of Islam that could acculturate with the native custom, behavior and culture this last religion might grow and dominate Indonesia. As a result, Islam and culture in Indonesia are acculturated and assimilated each other.
It has been claimed that culture and religion are the same. They work together to enrich human spirituality. In Islam for instance, there are many traditional rituals believed as  apart of religious liturgies like “passili” for pregnant mother in Makassar,  “Islam kejawen” and “slametan” in Java, they are Hindu-Budha inheritances adopted and believed as part of Islam.
However, Islam is a religion and culture is a culture. They have their own orientation, and they must be distinct. When culture believed as a part of religious liturgy, it will be wrong because it’s believed that Islam as religion has been perfect. The only two books as the axioms to teach Muslims in praying are Holy qur’an and Hadist. Furthermore, in modern Islam culture does not have sacred value anymore, it’s no longer part of religion and it’s not more than traditional activity.
In conclution, islam is monotheism religion that teaches human to belive the only One God namely “Allah“ through its holy book, Qur’an and prophet’s instruction, hadist. Islam with its Tauhidbrings a mission to devaluate or desacrelize the traditional faith and myths so that people may distinguish which one is religion and which one is culture. In term of historical remains culture could exist to enrich and color Indonesia’s existence in the world.

when the religion politicized

When The Religion Politicized, Legitimation  Crisis Appears

By: Saddam husain
The debate of relationship between religion and politic is reappeared in Indonesia recently because sequence tragedies and cases such as corruption of import beef and suplying of holy qur’an that happen to islamic political parties and some secular parties.
Obviously, Islam in Prophet era was a political power. Because of islamic teaching the great civilization was reached through “the charter of Madina”. At that time every tribe, race and even religion lived in Madina harmoniously. This was because Islam as a political system was based on the thinking of Qur’an and lead by the ideal leader, Muhammad s.a.w.. As a result, “the charter of madina” and its golden history nowadays inspire many countries to adopt Islam as their political power to create the public order and of course the “glory of islam” like Prohet Muhammad did.
However, Prophet era and this era is absolutely different. No wonder if Islam succedded to organize the civil society because it was lead by the holy one, the son of Abdullah. But nowadays, especially in Indonesia some political parties that use the symbol of islam as their jargon are only pretext to persuade if not deceive society to elect them. Their pictures, billboards, taglines and campaigns are very islamic as if they are the angel who sent by the God to help the human being. Furthermore, in term of poltical view religion has been created to spoil the society with the beautiful promises.
I personally think that Islam is a perfect rules to be constitution because islam with its holy book regulates everything to do, Islam builds the ideal politic to run.But “Islam” is the worst system ever when it is used to be a pretext to get a domination and then use it as the mask to do corruption, collusion, nepotism, despotism, and suppression. In this case, public distrust increases over and over because the society is disappointed with the beautiful pomises that never come true. In other word, “legitimation crisis” fall on islamic political parties.
In conclusion, i agree that with “true Islam”the second Madina will appear in indonesia, but as long as Islam is only a symbol and deviance actions always happen there is no madina for indonesia but hell is.

The Deity Problem Of Jesus Christ

The Deity Problem Of Jesus Christ

by: saddam husain
Jesus or prophet Isa a.s. in Islam name is one of the most influential figures for human being. His life was very mysterious with the result that there so many books which talk about him and record about his hystory. Such as Bibel, Holy qur’an, canon and apokrifas the main sources for people to write the history about him for example “ the mystery of historical jesus ( loay fatoohy )”. Whether islam or Christianity believe that jesus is the messangger of god, eventhough the last one has a different view about it. In fact, the speculations of Jesus’ existance have created the ongoing debates for centuries, this is because of the deity problem of the son of Maria.
It has been claimed that jesus is a God. There is a reason to support this belife. In trinity docthrin, especially in Athanasius credo ( read A hystory of God: 4.000-year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, page:175-211) believed that this world had been created from nothing (creatio ex nihilo). The world was understood as creature, so it must be dirty, brittle, and even useless as the result jesus as the guidence is not the creature but he is the holy essence as well as God to share the compassion for human being. In a simple analogy, the deity of Jesus could be understood as god in triangle form, the substnce of triangle is only one but it has three points, every point is bound each other in one substance.
However, there are many strong arguments against the thinking of the deity. Such as the Arius concept about the different essence beetwen god and Jesus, and the Tauhid teaching in Islam. Arius as one of the expert in christology in the 3rd century believed that jesus is the creature as just the others are. Jesus is the holy human because he is the messanger of God to teach human about the the way of life and become the role model in relationship. He must be creature so that men can follow him as a guidance to understand the absolute truth. Furthermore, in a triangel analogy, where the God may come in three forms is very confusing and even unplausible because the holiness of God should be separated from the dirty of the world whereas when the god comes in human form, he must touch the dirty of world. Moreover, Jesus himself declared that he is weaker than God.
In conclusion, the deity problem of Maria’s son is unacceptable not only in rational thinking but also in religious perspective. Because Christian itself believes that bible or genesis as its holy book never tell specifically God and jesus is one essence.

our democracy

My Indonesia my democracy

Indonesia has been independent for 67 years, it means that Indonesia is mature enough to be standing alone in taking care of its own sovereignty. There had been some ideologies that Indonesia ever followed, such as NASAKOM, COMMUNISM and PANCASILA. Indonesia, as well as many of liberal counties in the world follows DEMOCRACY as its form of government. In Soekarno’s regime the form of Government was “Demokrasi Terpimpin”, Soeharto regime was “liberal Democracy” and eventually, after reformation in 1998 the form of government was “Democracy”.
Democracy in Indonesia is 15 years old, there are many countries in the world stated that Indonesia is one of a big country that success to follow democracy. South Korea and Australia for example, they showed their appreciation for Indonesia as democratic country by saying that they want to study about the implementation of democracy system in BDF (Bali Democracy Forum) in Sanur, Bali (october,2012). Furthermore, the president, Susilo Bambang Yudhiyono was given a democracy Medal and also price by International Association of Political Consultant (IAPC) in 2007.
According to freedom house (one of international survey association that observes the freedom routinely) Indonesia, a state with majority of inhabitant are Muslim is categorized as freedom country as free as Europe. This achievement is reached by assembling good democracy.

All of achievements are some things great of us. Nevertheless, democracy brings many damages for the people. Suffer, rebellion, violence and many else that still exist in Indonesia are the effects of democracy. From president election until village apparatus election, the process of democracy causes chaos. Many people feel disappointed with the result, they cannot accept it. They claim that, there are many deceits in election process. For example: the mayoral election in Palopo recently. The citizen burnt some buildings to show their angers and dissatisfactions to the government.
Perhaps, Indonesia is success to implement Democracy in international view but the reality that citizen feel directly is very contrast. Appreciation, praise, medal, and even success that Indonesia achieved in international perspective are very useless when the Indonesian is still under fear because of democracy. Do we need something different? Everybody can answer it, yes or no!

nobility

Nobility

Indonesia as a multicultural nation has many tribes. According to the data of census in 2000 by BPS, there are over 300 ethnic groups that spread around the world. Java tribe is the biggest tribe in Indonesia with population reach 41% of the total population. Every ethnic, has its own term to classify the society. For example, Karaeng, Daeng and Andi as noblemen  from Makassar. Priyayi (blue blood), Raden Mas and Raden from java and etc. All of the terminologies to classify people have their own history to be accepted in society.
it is believed that, nobility title has historical value for giving to people. Only the generation of king, or hero who gets the title. In Bugis tribe for instance, “andi” will be given automatically to children if the parents are “andi” as well. The title will continue for all generations if they can keep it by marrying with the same noble couple. In this term, people prefer to say that “ we have to keep the nobility title because it is the historical remain. It reminds us about the struggle of our hero in the past “.
However, in a real context of life, nobility title does not have a sacral value anymore. It is given not only for the generation of the hero or nobleman but also the one who has big influence in society. For example, Mr. A does not have historical line as nobleman in his family, but he is the richest man in his environment. As a result, people will call him as “ raden mas, andi, karaeng, opu, etc “.  Moreover, many people use their nobility title to do nepotism, discrimination and even despotism.
In conclusion, the title is not just the way it is but people create it to get a special treatment In the society. Whether noblemen or common society should  portray their status in a big stage of life to harmonize the world.
